As one of only six Dark Sky Park designations in the United States, Marathon has a unique position in the Big Bend area concerning astronomy. We are also a Class I dark sky which is the darkest designation on the Bortle Chart. Unlike most areas that have Class I dark sky designation we have amenities (groceries, gas, restaurants, lodging) nearby which is a huge advantage to amateur and professional astronomers who are used to camping out in the middle of nowhere. The stargazing site, located near the Marathon Motel, is equipped with a 24” Dobsonian telescope donated by the McDonald Observatory.
